The seeded players managed to defeat the Italians Giulia Dal Pozzo and Carlotta Casali, the tournament’s number 5 seeds, on Wednesday, August 26, with a double 6-3 in just over 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Behind the victory there was a well-planned strategy. The Portuguese players took to the court determined, with an impeccable tactical approach, a good reading of the spaces, and their opponents perfectly studied. With a clear commitment to opening angles and bringing the game to the net, Araújo and Nogueira demonstrated an almost perfect synergy and teamwork, a combination that allowed them to neutralize Dal Pozzo, the 19-year-old rising star considered the great promise of Italian padel.

In the 114 points contested during the two sets, 62 were resolved with winners and 52 ended in errors. Of the 114 total points, Portugal won 65, with 46 winners and 19 errors forced on their opponents. Italy, on the other hand, scored 49 points, with 16 winners and 33 errors forced on their rivals (see Winners table). The data reflect a clear difference in the tactical effectiveness of the match: Portugal achieved a 57.1% effectiveness in resolving and forcing points, compared to Italy’s 42.9%.

1º set

Both pairs exhibited a solid defense of their serve until the fifth game, when the Italians had two break point opportunities; an intensely contested game, with Nogueira as the most decisive player, intervening in 23 touches in the play that allowed the Portuguese to defend Araújo’s serve. In the following game, during Dal Pozzo’s serve, the situation was reversed. The break point opportunity was now for the Portuguese, who did not miss it and consolidated the lead on the scoreboard at 4-2. From that moment, Araújo and Nogueira took control to close the first set 6-3.

2º set

During the second set, a good rhythm was maintained, with a high technical level from both pairs. Faced with an Italian attack clearly aimed at focusing the game on Nogueira, the Portuguese responded by shifting the pressure to Casali. A strategy that proved effective, as the demands on the Italian player forced Dal Pozzo to move into her area to cover her, causing her to make several errors detrimental to the Italian pair.

The Portuguese tactic prevailed over the Italian one, and its effects were soon noticeable. The first break point opportunity came in the third game, during Casali’s serve. Using a star point, Araújo and Nogueira took advantage of the opportunity to gain the lead on the scoreboard.

With the exception of the 4-2 , in which the seeded players took the game with a quick 40-0, all other games were tightly contested, particularly the eighth and ninth, the latter of which Araújo and Nogueira broke Dal Pozzo’s serve to seal the match at 6-3.

During the match, marked by the equality between both pairs, a total of 859 touches were recorded: 385 in the first set and 474 in the second. Ana Catarina Nogueira was the most sought-after player, with a total of 229 touches (see Touches table).

Conversation after the match

At the end of the match, we spoke with the player Ana Catarina Nogueira to learn about her feelings regarding today’s game.

Question: First of all, I’d like to congratulate you on the victory. How did you feel playing alongside Sofia? What sensations did you experience on the court?
Answer: Great feelings, we played really well!

Q: You played a lot with Casali, which forced Dal Pozzo to leave her position several times, leading her to make several mistakes. Also, in your attack, there was a noticeable effort to open angles and play toward the net, which resulted in several points. Have you studied and agreed on all of that with your coach, or does it come from your experience?
A: It was the result of the analysis we did of the pair and of the strategy prepared for the match together with the coaches.

Q: As for tomorrow, it’s going to be a tough game; besides, Sofía will have a double shift. She executed plays of high technical level and remarkable tactical vision, finding open spaces and delivering decisive, powerful shots at critical moments. With the support of her partner, Ana Catarina Nogueira, creating winner situations from her excellent serving, Araújo was able to shine. Of the pair’s 46 winners, 31 were accomplished by Sofia. Likewise, the Portuguese player made 16 errors (of the 33 recorded by the pair), some resulting from higher-risk technical decisions.
