The 20th Mediterranean Games are underway, and Portugal heads into the padel competition with strong grounds for hoping for gold, particularly in the mixed category, where the Portuguese team is counting on the energy and chemistry of siblings Sofia and Peu Araújo — the tournament’s number one pair — to reach the final.
On the opposite side of the draw are the Italian pair Marco Cassetta and Giulia Dal Pozzo, the second seeds. If fate does not throw a spanner in the works, the two teams will face each other in the final, meaning Portugal will already be guaranteed a medal. The question now is whether it will be gold or silver, although the current form suggests we can dream of the top step of the podium.
In the women’s draw, Sofia Araújo and Ana Catarina Nogueira — the top seeds — face a tough challenge in the quarter-finals. They will be up against the Italians Carlotta Casali and Giulia Dal Pozzo — the fifth seeds —, with the latter currently enjoying one of the finest spells of her career.
The Portuguese pair face the challenge of not having played together in recent years, a factor that could prove decisive against a duo currently on a winning streak. Added to this are the specific characteristics of the court and the demands of an outdoor tournament, which could influence the course of the match and test the players’ ability to adapt. With all these factors in play, this match promises to be one of the most exciting and closely fought of the day.
Despite the challenge, Pádel Información’s predictions suggest that Portugal have a good chance of reaching the semi-finals, where they would face the third seeds: the Spanish pair Nuria Rodríguez and Jimena Velasco.
In the men’s draw, the Portuguese pair are expected to have a comfortable run in the round of 16 and a straightforward passage into the quarter-finals. The brothers Miguel and Nuno Deus, the fourth seeds, will face the Kosovar pair Lavdrim and Leotrim Krasniqi, the 19th seeds, and are clear favourites to progress.
Meanwhile, Peu Araújo and Pedro Graça, the seventh seeds, face a manageable tie against the Slovenian pair Simon Javoršek and Boštjan Repanšek, the 15th seeds. Both matches are scheduled for today, 23 August: the first at 6.00 pm (Spanish time) and the second at 8.00 pm.
The two Portuguese pairs are in the bottom half of the draw, so their main opponents will be the second seeds: the Spaniards José Antonio Diestro and David Gala. In the case of Araújo and Graça, they did not have a particularly favourable draw, as they could face Diestro and Gala in the quarter-finals. The challenge facing the Deus brothers will be no mean feat: before they can think about the Spanish pair, they must first take on the French duo Yoan Boronad and Timeo Fonteny, the eighth seeds, in the quarter-finals. Even so, their chances of reaching the podium and competing for a bronze medal remain intact.
Portugal could achieve a historic performance
The preleminary assessment, therefore, look promising for the Portuguese delegation: gold in the mixed event, a place in the semi-finals for the women’s team and bronze for the men’s team, featuring the Deus brothers. It is a scenario that invites us to dream of a historic performance and to believe that Portuguese talent will make its mark at the 20th Mediterranean Games in Taranto in 2026.
