Pretoria P1 had already showcased the potential of the young players Martina Calvo and Claudia Fernández, who reached the final on their debut as a pair. Now, London P1 has confirmed it: the world number 4s defeated the world number 1s, Gemma Triay and Delfi Brea, with ease and determination, winning 7-5, 6-3.
At 14:00 local time (15:00 in Spain), the Olympia was buzzing with a packed crowd gathered to watch the women’s final of the first P1 tournament held in the British capital. Played indoors and without extreme weather conditions, the tournament offered more stable playing conditions, conducive to clean points and more sophisticated tactical play.
Martina Calvo knew how to turn these conditions to her advantage right from the start. The number 4 pair, determined to take their revenge for the last final in Pretoria against the number 1s, got off to a flying start and quickly took a 3-0 lead. Despite a fightback from Brea and Triay, who managed to break serve twice, Calvo and Fernández’s determination to win their first title together spurred them on to win the first set 7-5.
In the second set, the gap began to widen, and the number 4s took a 5–0 lead. Even so, the number 1s did not give up and, in a final burst of effort, managed to reduce the deficit to 5–3. However, the fatigue accumulated after a three-set semi-final the previous afternoon began to take its toll on the more experienced players, and their efforts were not enough to stop the young Spanish pair, who went on to close out the match 6–3.
Martina Calvo’s talent
From start to finish, Martina Calvo demonstrated attitude, determination, talent and intensity; her energy even revitalised Claudia, who rose to the occasion by producing a brand of padel we hadn’t seen so far this year. For this reason, Pádel Información considers the Pamplona-based player to be the MVP of this tournament.
At 18 years, 1 month and 4 days, Martina Calvo has thus become the youngest player in the history of the Premier Padel circuit to win her first title (a record previously held by Andrea Ustero).
